Photographer and pilot Alex MacLean wanted to learn more about the Keystone XL pipeline, which if approved will carry oil from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, so he decided to take pictures from above of the tar sands that will supply oil to the project.
What he found shocked him.

PS ~ the little black bumps (not so little in fact, considering photo shot from an airplane) on the last photo are pet coke piles, the crap that results from refining tar sands to synthetic crude oil. Petcoke is the crap that was stored in Detroit, and then made gone by city officials, and then in Chicago, where the politicians are playing politician games but pretending they are going to make sure the piles do no harm.
